Most of us accept that it can be permissible to kill people on a large
scale in war. Does morality become more permissive in a state of war?
Killing a person is in general among the most seriously wrongful forms
of action, yet most of us accept that it can be permissible to kill
people on a large scale in war. Does morality become more permissive in
a state of war?

The spirit of carpe diem has been hijacked by consumer culture. Cultural
philosopher Roman Krznaric calls us to arms: the time has come to seize
back the day. It is one of the oldest pieces of life advice in Western
history: carpe diem. First uttered by the Roman poet Horace over two
thousand years ago, it has become our cultural inheritance, reflected in
mottos from ‘live as if you might die tomorrow’ to ‘be in the moment’,
from the iconic advertising slogan ‘Just do it’ to the Twitter hashtag
#yolo (‘you only live once’).

*HAVE THE MEDIA FAILED ON CLIMATE CHANGE?*
*James Randerson
*Dinsdag 16 mei | 10:00 - 11:30 uur | 5412.0020 (Blauwe Zaal Duisenberg)

It is hard to think of a bigger news story than climate change. It is an
existential threat that is impacting the lives of millions; a major
contributor to mass extinctions; and preventing its worst impacts can
only be done by re-engineering the global economy. And yet despite the
mega-wattage of its news value, the media has struggled to find ways to
report it that will capture the public's imagination and make people
care. In 2015, the Guardian pioneered a radically different approach
with its Keep it in the Ground project. Dr James Randerson, former
assistant national news editor at the Guardian, ran this project. Meer
