Bij het grote publiek is Noam Chomsky vooral bekend geworden door zijn aanhoudende kritiek op de Amerikaanse buitenlandse politiek. Maar ook op zijn vakgebied is deze taalwetenschapper een grote naam. Chomsky zocht een verklaring voor het gemak waarmee kinderen een razend ingewikkeld systeem als hun moedertaal onder de knie krijgen.
