*Strategy study for the Solar Academy*
Working on the solar sector major bottleneck
By growing global populations, higher levels of economic development,
and increased consumption by individuals, businesses, and governments,
the demand for energy is rising world-wide. More and more people are
becoming aware of the risks of energy use, both in terms of supply
security and global warming. Extrapolation of current trends indicate a
doubling of world energy consumption by the year 2050.
ECN, the leading Dutch energy research institute, is at the cutting edge
of European efforts in the development of new technologies that meet
tomorrow?s energy demand. ECN conducts research and development over a
large range of energy technologies, carefully selected by impact over
the next decades.
1. focuses on the knowledge and information required by the
government to develop and evaluate policies and to achieve policy
objectives in the field of energy, the environment and
2. partners with industry in the development and implementation of
products, processes and technologies important for the transition
to a sustainable energy system.
3. works closely with Dutch and foreign universities and research
institutes and performs a bridging function towards implementation
by carrying out technological research.
ECN is located in the dunes near the village of Petten, 60 km North of
Amsterdam. At present, ECN employs a staff of around 600. ECN is an
international community that welcomes researchers from abroad.

assisting ECN in the selection and business development of patents and
technology packages, in various stages of development and market readiness.*
*Solar** Academy**, focus on staff training, a major bottleneck for the
**The Solar Academy BV is the first comprehensive international training
organisation for process engineers and operators in the solar energy
sector, a ?10 billion industry, that grew by 60% last year. Solar
Academy is an investment of over ?12 million.
Clients are international solar cell producers and manufacturers of
solar cell production equipment. Students are typically young highly
educated technicians from all over the world. The training curriculum
was developed by ECN, and is currently operational. Besides for
trainings the pilot production line will be used for research and
development purposes of the Partners.
Solar Academy is an initiative of the Energy research Centre of the
Netherlands (ECN) with its Partners Solland Solar (a Dutch solar cell
manufacturer), the Institute for Semiconductor Technology IHT of the
RWTH (Aachen) and the regional investment organisation of Limburg, LIOF.
Several investors have committed to investments in this initiative.
* The assignment offers an excellent and motivated students both highly
interesting academic and business challenges while the results are
expected to be practically and commercially applicable for Solar Academy.*
The candidate, with a distinct interest in the entrepreneurial aspects
of this venture will have the following responsibilities:
* development of a comprehensive market and business development
strategy, in close cooperation with the recently hired Managing
* analysis of the business cases of comparable training
organisations and the formulation of recommendations for the
market introduction of the Solar Academy **

* discussions with Partners, investors and market parties
* desk research
* identification and interviews with potential business partners
Student in Business Administration with a background in and with a
strong interest in strategy and concept development combined with a
passion for sustainable energy.

Period of 3-6 months in the period June-December 2008
*ECN offers a monthly compensation of 400 euros, and 200 euros per month
housing allowance, if applicable.
